Show Photos in Subfolders in Bridge

Today’s Question: I prefer to see photos from all subfolders when I select a parent folder in Adobe Bridge. However, when I enable this feature, as soon as I navigate to a different folder, I’m no longer seeing photos from subfolders. Is there a way to make this setting permanent?

Tim’s Quick Answer: Yes, you can permanently enable the option to view photos in subfolders for the selected folder using the “Always Show Items from Subfolders” option for the Content panel in Adobe Bridge.

More Detail: In Adobe Bridge you can view images not only from the currently selected folder, but from all subfolders within that folder, by enabling the option found on the menu at View > Show Items from Subfolders. However, as noted in today’s question, when you navigate to a different folder that feature will be automatically turned off by default.

If you prefer to keep the “Show Items from Subfolder” feature enabled permanently, that is an option. Start by making sure the feature is enabled by going to the View menu and looking at the “Show Items from Subfolders” command. If there is a checkmark icon to the left of that command, it is enabled. If there isn’t a checkbox click the command to enable the feature.

Next, go to the Content panel and click the panel popup menu to the right of the label for the panel. The icon for the popup menu shows three horizontal lines, which is often referred to as the “hamburger menu” because it resembles the layers of a hamburger. On the popup menu turn on the ” Always Show Items from Subfolders” option, and the feature will remain on even when you navigate to a different folder.

Keep in mind that keeping this option enabled can make browsing a bit more sluggish, because for each folder Bridge needs to process previews for all images in all subfolders. If that performance issue becomes a problem, you can disable the feature by choosing View > Show Items from Subfolders from the menu.
